Fluffy Puto Cheese (Steamed Cake)

My son’s birthday was last month, and I invited all his school friends home. I ordered a birthday cake and made puto cheese for everyone. They all loved it so much that I was worried some children might miss out.

I didn’t believe they would turn out so good, just like Amber Restaurant’s puto cheese (which was my inspiration). They’re fluffy and have cheese inside, which makes the cakes more delicious.

To help you out, I’ll share my secret for Filipino special puto cheese so you can easily make it at home for your children (or yourself). Let’s get started!

Why Is Puto Cheese So Famous?

Here are some of the most common reasons why I think this puto is famous not only in the Philippines but worldwide.

Fluffy texture:

I know all cakes have a fluffy and soft texture inside, but if you’ve tried puto cheese, you would know it’s extra fluffy. This extra softness makes it stand out among all the cakes.

Culture Value:

Filipinos have been making Puto for ages; the method is the same, but the ingredients are different. Before, it was made with rice flour; now, it is also made with all-purpose or cake flour, with the addition of cheese.

Cheese Pockets:

My favorite part of puto is the cheese pockets. The cheese tastes so delicious with the soft and fluffy cake that you’ll never forget the taste.

Let’s Try Puto Cheese At Home

Let’s find out why the Amber Restaurant Puto cheese always comes out fluffy.

Key-Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour or cake flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • One tablespoon of baking powder
  • 1/4 cup evaporated milk
  • 3/4 cup water
  • One tablespoon of melted butter
  • 1/4 cup grated cheese (optional)
  • Strips of cheese for toppings
  • One egg

Cooking Instructions:

  • Take a bowl and flour sifter. It’s really important; otherwise, there will be lumps in the cake batter. If you want to avoid this situation, put the bowl on the kitchen counter, then put the flour sifter in it. Add flour to the sifter, then sugar and baking powder.
  • After adding all of them, stir the sifter so that only small particles of flour, sugar, and baking powder are used. This is necessary because larger particles can cause lumps in the batter.
  • Take another bowl and add the egg, melted butter, evaporated milk, and water. Then, use an egg beater to mix everything well. Once you’re sure it’s mixed well, combine this mixture of flour, sugar, and baking powder.
  • Now comes the most important step: if you do it wrong, the cake won’t turn out well. You must mix the mixture of batter carefully, or there will be lumps. I would suggest you mix slowly while making sure there are no lumps in the batter.
  • Add grated cheese once the batter is prepared, mix again, and let the batter rest for up to 15 minutes. Pour the batter into the cupcake molds and add the toppings of cheese.
  • Make sure to prepare a steamer pot and place the cake in it, then let them cook for 10 minutes. Don’t forget to cover the lid with a thick cloth to prevent steam water from dripping.
  • The wait is over. After 10 minutes, your puto cheese will be ready for you and your family to eat.
