What Makes Pork Asado Siopao So Delicious?
There are a few things that make Pork Asado Siopao so delicious, the first one is the buns and then the flavorful fillings. The combination of sweet and spicy fillings makes this snack a treat for everyone. Let’s learn more about it in detail!
Fluffy Buns:
I really like the soft and fluffy texture of the buns; they’re so soft because of the steaming process. Once the buns are made into the shape, they’re steamed to perfection, which ensures that they remain moist and light.
Pork Filling:
The heart of any good Siopao is its filling, and the Pork Asado filling in these buns is truly something special. The pork is slow-cooked until it’s tender and juicy.
Sauces:
The sauce blend used in Pork Asado Siopao is what sets it apart from others. A careful mix of soy sauce, oyster sauce, and Hoisin sauce complements the pork perfectly.
Customization:
It’s up to you which drink you want besides the Pork Asado Siopao, but I would highly recommend you to go with orange or Tetra juice.

Key-Ingredients:
Siopao Asado Ingredients:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons white sugar (for the yeast)
- 2 teaspoons dry active yeast
- 1 and 1/3 cups warm water
- 3 tablespoons shortening or lard
- 1/2 cup white sugar (for the flour)
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
For the pork Asado filling:
- 1/2 kilo pork shoulder (cut into small, bite-sized pieces)
- 3 tablespoons cooking oil
- 6 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 medium onion (minced)
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch diluted in 1/4 cup water
- 1/8 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 to 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon Hoisin sauce (optional)
- 2 cups water
Cooking Instructions:
- You have to start by making the dough: First, mix the yeast with 2 tablespoons of sugar and warm water in a bowl, then let it sit for about 10 minutes until it becomes foamy. This means the yeast is active and ready to help your dough rise.
- The second step is taking a large mixing bowl, which will be used to combine the dough ingredients such as flour, 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt. After combining, mix everything together to form a soft dough, then knead it for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Get a bowl and grease it before placing the dough, then cover it with a damp cloth. Let the dough rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until it doubles in size.
- In the meantime, you can prepare the filling. So, for the filling, heat oil in a pan and sauté the minced garlic and onion. Then add the pork pieces to the pan and cook for a few minutes until they turn brown on all sides. Pour in the soy sauce, sugar, oyster sauce, and Hoisin sauce.
- After adding the sauce and sauté the garlic and onion, add water and let the mixture simmer on low heat for about 30–40 minutes. Make sure to stir every once in a while to prevent the bottom from burning.
- Once the pork is cooked, add the cornstarch mixture to thicken the sauce in the pan. Don’t forget to keep stirring till you get a consistency that’s not too runny but not too thick, either. Then, set the filling aside to cool.
- After the dough has risen, punch it down, divide it into equal portions, shape each portion into a ball, and then flatten it. Simply place a spoonful of the cooled pork filling in the center of each flattened dough.
- Carefully gather the edges of the dough and pinch them together at the top to seal the filling inside. Make sure there are no holes where the filling can escape. Place each filled bun on a small square of parchment paper.
- Arrange the buns in a steamer basket, leaving some space between them, as they will expand while cooking. Steam the buns for about 15–20 minutes, or until they puff up and become shiny.
- Finally, carefully remove the buns from the steamer and serve them while they’re still warm and steamy. You can enjoy them as is or with your favorite dipping sauce on the side.
